An article shown on CNNMoney.com tells us that Nero is going to sell a package that will allow you to run TiVo on your desktop. The package will come with a media card and controller. Essentially allowing you to turn your computer into a TiVo media center.
Read more if you want to learn why you should avoid TiVo if you can and my experiences with their company.
I personally use TiVo. I use it because it because it interfaces with some free packages that I enjoy like Gallien (Download Shows from your TV that you convert with SUPER ©). I did try but found it too difficult to get MythTV to work. Although when I have time I plan to try and build another MythTV box. Anyhow, with all my skills and TV I watch I have become rather an expert on this stuff. I also talk to companies every day being in the technical support industry.
Whenever I have called TiVo they have usually outright lied to me, stating mis-facts. For example, when I called them to complain that the TiVo II remote control had a very annoying lag that was not in the TiVo I remote they told me that was because the remote operates on IR and is slower. IR is an acronym for "Infrered Light". So it is slow because it operates at the speed of light (says TiVo). Of course that conversation did not take place until I went through the normal troubleshooting with them.. "Your TiVo is broken buy a new one", "It is all in your head", "You need a new remote". I did buy a Harmony remote and that resolved my issue. TiVo saved money buy building a cheaper remote.
They also use slower processors then needed. And when you call to complain that the interface is slow they tell you, "That is because TiVo is always doing background processes so you can expect lag some times.".
When you call them and tell them your TiVo keeps recording repeat shows when you have it set not too. They will tell you it is because the cable company that supplies the guide is marking the show wrong and they have no control over that. The truth is they CHOOSE to have no control over that. They could easily write into the program to look at other data on the show. For example that it uses generic information from when the show first started and has no real description.
But here is the REAL reason why you should never buy TiVo. When I setup my TiVo Series II... I called the cable company and TiVo and then the Cable company. I spent a good 2 hours removing all the foreign speeking channels from my TiVo so that it would not record shows I did not understand. All of the sudden with no warning my TiVo started recording foreign channels again. I would remove them from the list and then it would do it again months later. What was happening was the cable company was adding channels and moving them around. Every time this would happen TiVo would default to add them to my list. So of course I called TiVo and told them I wanted it to default to NOT add them to my list. They told me that the cable company controlled that and tried to get me off the phone. I of course know better and told them that THEY choose what their software does and could write in the option. After an hour of discussing this with multiple people my argument changed to, "TiVo does not care about their costomers". Not a single person I spoke to could say, "That is a good idea I will pass it on to our developer team to review.". That was all I wanted to hear. Not even the head of Level 2 support would tell me that. He also would not tell me who the Operations Manager was. And he told the engineer, "Aaron B." who was supposed to help me, to hang up on me. That was where my call ended. Their argument for not looking into setting up this functionality... ready... Not enough customers are complaining about it. Of course the fact that they are not recording it does not seem to make a difference to them.
